Instrument Rating

The Instrument Rating is necessary to be able to fly in cloudy or low visibility conditions and in certain airspace.

Since technology for helicopter instrument or IFR flight is becoming more common it is being used more in offshore, EMS and corporate flight environments.  Many helicopter companies require their pilots to have their Instrument Rating to qualify for employment.

Minimum requirements:

Hold either a Helicopter Private Pilot or Helicopter Commercial Pilot Certificate,

At least a Class 3 medical certificate,

40 hours instrument training,

Pass both written and practical exams
